We Save Land: How LoveLove Films produced a new charity animation

LoveLove Films helps to promote environmental awareness through animation

Environmental conservation is a hot topic at present, and the work of various groups around the world makes headlines on a weekly basis. One charitable organisation for who this type of expansion of development is a major cause for concern is Summit Land Conservancy, which is about to launch the We Save Land animation. Based in Park City, Utah, Summit Land Conservancy has been committed to preserving the natural landscape of the region since 2002. Run by local residents dedicated to preserving the natural beauty and habitats along Utah’s Weber River, Summit Land Conservancy is a non-profit charity organisation dedicated to ensuring that this and other areas of natural beauty are protected from the encroachment of industry and the building of concrete jungles.

In September 2016, Summit Land Conservancy approached LoveLove Films to produce an engaging animated charity film to deliver the message of environmental conservation they wish to project. The reason for this is the annual November fundraising event held in Park City – Live PC, give PC. Now in early November, we are delighted to share the creative process behind this inventive campaign, allowing the innovative production and writing team responsible for the animation to reveal how the We Save Land film came about.

The We Save Land animated short tells the tale of a young boy living in an idyllic rural setting, spending his days marvelling at the world around him, and enjoying the natural pleasures of country life. The film follows the young protagonist over the course of a year, and the seasons change as he meets new friends – including We Save Land’s mascot Boot Guy – and embarks on new adventures. From building a snowman in the winter, to camping in the woods in the summer, the youngster’s experiences are intended to mirror those that many people living in rural areas are no doubt used to.

The turning point comes when the diggers and earth movers arrive, ripping the trees from the earth (or in this case, from the pages of the young boy’s drawn existence!) and covering everything in smog and urban sprawl. Gone are the lush fields and happily grazing animals, replaced with the hustle and bustle of city streets and pollution. The final scene offers some hope though, as the tiniest piece of greenery is left untouched, giving hope that with organisations such as Summit Land Conservancy help landscape will be saved and protected forever . Ultimately, this is the message that the We Save Land project wants to convey; that there is hope that the natural environment can be preserved, and that it is vital to protect and preserve the green spaces in our local areas against the creep of urban sprawl.

The production Team at LoveLove Films produced form concept to completion the project in an ambitious 8 weeks, working closely with the Summit Land Conservancy consulting the organisation’s key messages and objectives.

Jo the Art Director states:

“The Lovelove Films team wanted to produce a piece of work that showed the innocence of not only the young protagonist but also the wildlife that inhabit their world. It was important that the artwork reflected the beauty of the natural world which would be a stark contrast to the bulldozed grey world the protagonist later inhabits.

The team approached this from the very offset developing a touching storyline, characters, concept art , beautiful artwork and sound design. For me personally I loved working on this particular project as I got to apply my classical animation training in the artwork design stages and then seeing this be brought to life by the CGG animation team was fantastic.

The whole Lovelove Films team is incredibly proud of this animation not only because we believe its an incredibly touching story but we are extremely passionate about good causes especially preserving our natural environment for future generations.”

Sophie Islip from We Save Land stated:

“Working with the LoveLove Team was phenomenal and we are overjoyed with the animation and the animated world they have created!  We sincerely hope that the animation is enjoyed by audiences not only in the USA but also worldwide and the short film helps raise awareness of the importance of land conservation in our society.”
