LoveLove Films create entirety of graphics for BBC Films Formula One feature ‘Williams’
Following on from our success in creating motion graphics for TV shows such as Channel 4’s Lagos to London and The Super Orgasm, LoveLove Films were delighted when Minnow Films commissioned us to create the entirety of the graphics for the upcoming BBC Films feature Williams, a documentary from BAFTA-winning director Morgan Matthews which charts the story of Formula One’s most celebrated family.
Williams is a brand-new feature documentary from BAFTA-winning director Morgan Matthews, who has directed The Fallen, Beautiful Young Minds and X+Y. The film tells the story of Frank Williams’ rise to fame and how his family battled to keep him alive and the team afloat after the crash that left Frank wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life. Featuring heart-pounding racing footage, interviews with much-loved Formula One stars (including Sir Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell, Alan Jones and Sir Patrick Head) and candid never-before-seen accounts of what really went on behind closed doors, it is an honest, authentic and incredibly revealing portrait of one of the most extraordinary families in motorsport.
LoveLove Films were commissioned by Minnow Films to create the entirety of the graphics for the film, which is released in cinemas and Curzon Home Cinema from 4th August. With a quick turnaround time, Minnow Films approached us because they knew we were fast and efficient, having worked with them before on the Channel 4 program Lagos to London.
LoveLove Films were tasked with creating the graphics, which are featured on 25% of the film, this included animating 56 archive photos as well as creating and animating the titles, captions and subtitles.
We worked closely with director Morgan Matthews and producer Hayley Reynolds, who had a very clear vision of how the animated archive images should look. We used a multitude of animation techniques to animate the archive images, which were essential to the story as the film is predominantly told in the past.
On creating the animated archive images for the film, LoveLove Films’ Lead Animator Sunny Clarke states;
“We used a few animation techniques to animate the archive images. These involved cutting out all the individual elements, foreground and separating the layers – manipulating them to bring them to life. Morgan was very specific on the certain aspects of the images he wanted to be focussed on, so we played around with the focal lengths and animated them in a way that would help draw the viewer to that certain point.”

One of the many archive images LoveLove Films worked on.
On working on the film, LoveLove Films’ Producer Georgina Hurcombe states;
“LoveLove Films were delighted to work on the Williams film. It’s such an incredible story and a heart-rending watch, when we watched the first cut as a team we were all in tears. It was great to be working with Morgan Matthews and Hayley Reynolds. We’re all really looking forward to seeing the film on the big screen!”
Williams’ Director Morgan Matthews said on working with LoveLove Films;
“As the name would suggest, LoveLove put a huge amount of passion and care into their work. The LoveLove team really understood the fact that we had spent over three years working on our documentary about the Williams Formula One team, and that every detail had to be just right. They worked around the clock to get us there and I could not be happier with the results.”
Williams is in cinemas and Curzon Home Cinema from 4th August. Out on DVD, Blu-ray and on demand from 14th August.
