Placement Highlight

Tom Hill – 2nd Year Scriptwriting Student at BU talks about his Placement experience with Lovelove Films. Here is what he has to say:

My work experience placement at LoveLove Films has been invaluable and productive. I have been given a variety of tasks to complete, all of which have been beneficial by showing me the internal operations of a vibrant independent production company. Most of my placement has focused on gathering research and helping with  pre-production tasks. However without a doubt, the highlight of my experience has been helping with the “Hookline” shoot for the American band “Far in the Maples.”

The shoot took place in Bournemouth on the 13th of June; the band had flown from across the pond specifically for this shoot. Georgina Hurcombe led the organization of the production shoot. Preparations were soon underway as we kitted ourselves out in LoveLove Films crew T-shirts, organised the equipment in the studio and helped assemble the lighting for the blue screen set-up. The shoot was then kick-started by individual shots of the keyboard artist from the band, Reshy P.

Under Brian Nelson and Sunny Clarke’s guidance, recordings of each band member were taken. The team paid particular attention to the acting of each band member as well as the angle of camera set-up. Much discussion was made between the two and as a production assistant it was interesting to see how many different perspectives were needed during the recording- the collaboration of ideas was simply phenomenal.

I had been delegated the role of clapping the Clapper board in front of the camera  at the beginning of each recorded clip. It was only after I had started the task that I realised how important this process was for the post-editing aspect of the music video. The job was simple but intense; I had to pay attention to each shot and work closely with Brian and Sunny to make sure that I had the information on the board as up-to-date and as clear as possible, for each scene,  it was a necessary part of the process and I enjoyed the involvement as part of an autonomous and cohesive team unit.

After lunch it was Regina Conroy’s turn to be recorded. As she was the lead singer and has most of the screen time in the video, it was very important to make sure she was in the right mind set for the shoot. A make-up artist had been hired for this reason and adjustments were made with the lighting on the green screen in order to make the singer as radiant as possible. The result was fantastic; on the green screen alone Regina looks brilliant under the lights and performed with a lot of emotion and passion. Hence the day concluded on a very positive note.

At the moment the music video is being  animated and Sunny, who is the lead animator of the animation team commented:

“ Lovelove Films is looking forward to making this music video, as we have developed a distinct and exciting style that will act as the perfect visual representation of Far in the Maples music”.

He also plans to  animate the video by using Chroma to key out the blue screen and then composite the band in a mysterious animated world complete with owls, whirlpools and mind-bending neon tunnels”

I had a great time with the studio work. The whole process was carried out in a co-operative and friendly environment. Probably the best part of the experience was learning the process of a video recording, I liked how everyone had a certain role which contributed as a whole to the shoot and I am very grateful to LoveLove Films for giving me the opportunity to experience shooting a music video first hand and a great placement.
