Williams – BBC Films Feature Graphics

Williams Official Trailer

The Brief

LoveLove Films were commissioned by Minnow Films to create the entirety of the graphics for the BBC Films feature ‘Williams’, a documentary from BAFTA-winning director Morgan Matthews that charts the story of Formula One’s most celebrated family.

The graphics included animating 56 archive photos as well as creating and animating the titles, captions and subtitles. With a quick turnaround time, Minnow Films approached us because they knew we were fast and efficient, having worked with them before on the Channel 4 program Lagos to London.

The Process

We worked closely with director Morgan Matthews and producer Hayley Reynolds, who had a very clear vision of how the animated archive images should look. We used an array of animation techniques to animate the archive images, which were essential to the story as the film is predominantly told in the past.

The animation technique used to animate the archive images involved cutting out all the individual elements, foreground and separating the layers – manipulating them to bring them to life. Morgan wanted certain aspects of the images to be focused on, so we played around with the focal lengths and animated them in a way that would help draw the viewer to that certain point

The Result

Williams is receiving great early reviews and is in cinemas and Curzon Home Cinema from 4th August. Out on DVD, Blu-ray and on demand from 14th August.

On working on the film, LoveLove Films’ Producer Georgina Hurcombe states; “Lovelove Films were delighted to work on the Williams film. It’s such an incredible story and a heart-rending watch, when we watched the first cut as a team we were all in tears! We were delighted to be working with director Morgan Matthews and producer Hayley Reynolds We’re all really looking forward to seeing the film on the big screen”

Williams’ Director Morgan Matthews said on working with LoveLove Films; “As the name would suggest, LoveLove put a huge amount of passion and care into their work.  The LoveLove team really understood the fact that we had spent over three years working on our documentary about the Williams Formula One team, and that every detail had to be just right. They worked around the clock to get us there and I could not be happier with the results.””
